Story: Astrablemm, an alien child of no particular renown, finally scraped together enough space junk to create a racing cart and enter into a prestigious (Kid-friendly! Safe and fun!) derby in an attempt to earn their parents' love.
Objective: Simultaneously race and repair your failing alien kart in a desperate attempt to cross the finish line of this "completely safe" derby on top of a crystal mountain.
Core Gameplay: Since Astrablemm's cart is a hunk of space junk, many obstacles along the course will damage the pieces holding it together. While they loosen and risk falling apart, players can either try holding them in place, or attempt to repair the damage at the cost of steering capability during the repairs. Depending on the tire pressure, damage and amount of missing parts, players will notice their speed and maneuverability being affected in different ways.
There are three stages to the level, each harder than the last. Players will collect fuel, fix their cart as quickly as they can, and search for different paths and shortcuts to reach the finish line.
Game Engine: Space Junk Derby was built in Unity 2021.3.29f1. We decided to use URP (Universal Rendering Pipeline) to work with WebGL, allowing us to create a browser version in addition to standalone builds.
